How a Spirit Companion Comes Forward

One of the questions I’m sometimes asked is how I discover the spirits, stories, photographs, and vessels that become part of the Witchful Ways spirit companion collection.

The answer is that it is very much an intuitive process, and no two companions come forward in exactly the same way.

It Usually Begins With a Pull

I regularly come across vintage photographs, dolls, jewelry, and other older objects through antique shops, estate collections, secondhand sources, and other unexpected places.

I don’t necessarily know who or what I am looking for when I find them.

Instead, I choose intuitively.

There are certain pieces that create an immediate little internal “pull.” Something about them asks me to stop, pick them up, look closer, or bring them home, even when I don't yet understand why.

But finding the piece is only the beginning.

I Don't Decide Who Belongs to a Vessel

Once a photograph or vessel comes into my care, I spend time with it and allow whatever spirit energy may be connected to or drawn to it to come forward.

Sometimes that connection happens almost immediately. Other times, a piece may remain with me quietly for quite some time before an energy begins making itself known.

I don't begin by creating a character and assigning that character to an object. I allow the identity, personality, and energy surrounding each companion to unfold through my spiritual and intuitive work.

For me, that distinction is important.

How Their Stories Develop

As I work with a piece, information may begin presenting itself in different ways.

It can come through intuitive impressions, emotions, personality traits, repeated imagery, dreams, names, preferences, memories, sensations, or small details that continue appearing until a much fuller sense of the spirit begins to form.

Some companions are wonderfully expressive and seem eager to tell me everything at once. Others reveal themselves slowly, piece by piece.

Their stories are developed from these impressions and experiences during my work with them. They are not presented as historically researched biographies or documented identities unless I specifically state otherwise.

Rather, they are my interpretation of the spirit energy and information that comes forward through the process.

How Photographs and Vessels Are Chosen

When a companion is represented by an antique photograph, this does not necessarily mean that I have historically identified the physical person pictured in that photograph as the spirit companion.

Instead, I may have been intuitively drawn to the photograph first, and during my work a particular spirit energy may come forward and connect with or “claim” that image as the representation through which they wish to be known.

The same can be true of dolls, jewelry, boxes, and other vessels.

I may be the person who initially discovers the object, but I allow the connection between spirit and vessel to reveal itself rather than deciding beforehand who should belong to it.

Sometimes it feels almost as though I am simply gathering the pieces before understanding how they fit together.

When I Know They're Ready

I don't consider a companion ready to be offered simply because I have found a beautiful old photograph or interesting vessel.

I spend time with the piece first.

I want to have a sense of who has come forward, their personality, the kind of presence they carry, how they prefer to interact, and what sort of person or household may be best suited to them.

Only when I feel that connection has become clear enough do I create their story and offer them through Witchful Ways.

And then comes the part I cannot orchestrate at all:

finding their person.

I have always believed that the right companion has a way of catching the attention of the person meant to notice them. Sometimes it is the photograph. Sometimes it is one tiny detail in the story. Sometimes someone simply tells me, “I don't know why, but I keep coming back to this one.”

Perhaps that is simply intuition.

Perhaps it is something more.

Either way, I believe choosing a spirit companion should begin with that sense of connection. 🖤

A Note About Spirit Companion Stories

Unless specifically stated otherwise, names, life details, personalities, histories, and other information shared with Witchful Ways spirit companions are derived from my personal spiritual and intuitive practice. They should not be interpreted as independently verified historical or biographical information. Antique photographs and vessels are used as the spirit companion's chosen or intuitive representation and do not necessarily depict or historically belong to the spirit described.

The dolls in the Witchful Ways spirit companion collection come to me much the same way as photographs and other vessels: intuitively.

I find them through antique shops, estate collections, secondhand sources, private collections, and sometimes simply by being in the right place when a particular doll catches my attention.

Unless I specifically state otherwise in a listing, I am not claiming that a doll historically belonged to the spirit who later comes forward through it, nor that the spirit was already attached to the doll when I found it.

Instead, I think of these dolls as vessels and representations.

Sometimes I feel an unusual presence or energy around a doll from the very beginning. Other times, I am simply strongly drawn to the doll without knowing why and bring it into my collection. I then spend time working with it and allow the process to unfold naturally.

A spirit energy may begin to come forward and connect with that particular doll, eventually seeming to “claim” it as the vessel through which they wish to be represented and interacted with.

There are also occasions when a doll seems to carry something with it from the moment I encounter it. When that happens, I approach the process differently and spend time exploring what I am sensing before making any assumptions about its history or the presence surrounding it.

This is why I don't consider every old doll I find to be haunted, spirited, or a spirit vessel. Finding an antique doll is one thing.

Discovering that something continually seems to step forward through my work with it is something entirely different.

Only after I have spent time with the doll and feel that a distinct presence, personality, or energetic connection has revealed itself do I begin documenting the impressions and experiences that eventually become the companion's story.

As with my photograph companions, those stories reflect my personal intuitive and spiritual experiences with the piece. They are not presented as historically documented biographies unless I specifically state that historical information accompanied the doll.
